The Amalficoast
is situated south of Naples in the province of Salerno, facing the Gulf of Salerno and starts from Positano in the west until Vietri sul Mare in the east. It includes 13 villagesAmalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti e Vietri sul Mare.Another village, geografically taking part of the same area is Agerola, in the province of Naples. Its borders reach to Praiano and Furore. Each location of the "Divina Costiera, the divine coast", has his own character and its own traditions, often with ancient origins. The Amalficoast takes the name from the village Amalfi, which is not only the geographical but also the historical center of the coast.
The villages of the Amalficoast are linked together by the road SS 163, one of the most picturesque coastal roads of the world, which winds for about 50 km across the landscape between the blue sea and green mountains, the "Monti Lattari”. The Amalficoast is famous worldwide for its incomparable natural beauty. The residents were able to integrate seamlessly into this context, reclaiming land for agriculture or construction from the steep slopes. This created an unique landscape where the villages are framed into the rocks like diamonds between bays with crystal clear water and the steep mountain range. In 1997 the Amalficoast was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Amalficoast was a tourist destination already for the ancient Romans and witness are the ruins of roman villas in Positano and Minori.
Due to its mild climate, its rich history and culture, the Coast can boast of a tourist activity for 7 months a year with tourists from all over the world.
Positano is the pearl of the coast with his elite tourism, Amalfi is one of the ancient maritime republics, together with Pisa, Genoa and Venice, Ravello is called the city of music, in Conca dei Marini is the Emerald Grotto and Vietri sul Mare is known worldwide for production of artistic ceramic
Trekking is a less known activity on the Amalficoast, but highly recommended. There are numerous hiking paths, which are worth to be walked. The most famous one is the "Sentiero degli Dei - Path of the Gods", a former muletrack that leads from Bomerano (Agerola) to Positano with incomparable views of the Gulf of Salerno and the peninsula of Sorrento. In spring and autumn, the village of Praiano organize concerts on the path of gods. Another path that is absolutely worth to be walked is the path inside the Amalfi valley "Valle delle Ferriere" with its waterfalls, on the way back following up to Pontone (Scala) with its incredible view to the tower “Torre dello Ziro” with Atrani on the left and Amalfi on the right. For a walk on all possibile paths of the Amalficoast are required at least 2 weeks. In addition, the Amalficoast is confortable located for day trips to surrounding areas, such as Capri, Pompei, Vesuvius, Ercolano, Sorrento and Naples.
